School District mails enrollment packets

Thursday, July 5, 2007

The Emporia school district this week mailed enrollment packets to all returning students and pre-enrolled kindergarten students in the district.

Parents may complete enrollment in advance or attend a central enrollment for all schools at Emporia High School from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 27 and July 30.

Enrollment materials can be returned by mail or delivered to the Board of Education Office, 501 Merchant St., by Wednesday, July 25. Summer office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fridays. Parents of more than one student can write one check for payment of all student fees.

Packets may also be brought to the central enrollment.

Personnel from each school will assist with the enrollment process. Food service staff also will be available to process applications for free- and reduced-price lunches, and transportation staff will have information about bus schedules and routes. Parents can pay all fees for K-12 students at one time, using cash, check or credit card.

New students should enroll during central enrollment. Packets will be provided at that time. Parents of new students should bring each child’s birth certificate, immunization records and record of a physical exam taken any time during the child’s school career. New kindergarten students must have taken a physical exam after Jan. 1, 2007.

On both days, the Flint Hills Community Health Center will offer an immunization clinic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fees will be paid separately to FHCHC and parents should bring proof of income to be considered for sliding-scale fees. Parents also should bring immunization records and insurance or medical cards. Parental consent is needed for children under age 18 to receive vaccinations.

Interpreters will be available to assist Spanish-speaking parents and students.

The first day of school in Emporia is Tuesday, Aug. 14.

All K-6 schools will be open for classroom visitations Thursday, Aug. 9. Hours for each building’s open house will be provided at enrollment and can be found on the calendar on the district web site, www.usd253.org.  More information about enrollment, fees and school supply lists also can be found on the Parent Information Page of the web site or by calling 341-2200.
