Emporia High senior-to-be Michaela Reynolds picked up a national championship in the first day of the USATF Youth Outdoor National Championships in Lisle, Ill. on Tuesday with a victory in the young women’s 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Reynolds, participating as a member of the Emporia Track Club, won the event by nearly 13 seconds over Jordan Williams of the Cornhusker Flyers with a time of 7 minutes, 40.04 seconds. Williams finished in 7:52.36 to place as the runner-up out of five participants.
Also, Emporian Andrew Wayman placed seventh out of nine competitors in the young men’s 2,000-meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 7:09.91. Alejandro Garcia won the event in a time of 6:34.40.
Two other members of the Emporia Track Club have yet to participate in the Outdoor National Championships.
Jacob Davies was scheduled to race in the young men’s 800-meter run at approximately 9 this morning, while Brandon Childs will compete in the young men’s high jump starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.
