Attends institute

Jordan Edwards of Emporia was selected to participate in the Kansas State Univeristy College of Engineering Science and Summer Institute, May 28-June 1.

The purpose of the institute is to offer high school students, who have completed their sophomore or junior year and have a strong background in math and science, an opportunity to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology and math.

Edwards, the son of Tracy and Mickey Edwards of Emporia, met with K-state faculty in various lectures and labs.

Leadership forum

The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities was held June 12-16 at Washburn University in Topeka. The forum was coordinated by the Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy.

The theme for this year’s forum was “ONE VOICE can be heard. ONE GROUP can make an impact. ONE COMMUNITY can change the world!” A diverse group of delegates were selected to attend the 2007 KSYLF, including Camillia Dieker a graduate of Emporia High school.

Summa cum laude

Sheena N. Walters of Emporia graduated May 18 from Missouri State University Honors College summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. MSU conferred 2,070 degree to students this spring during commencement ceremonies at the Harmon Student Center.

Walters was among 144 students who went beyond the standard expectations and were recognized for their work with a more rigorous curriculum in Missouri State’s Honors College as well as earning summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.9-4.0 on a 4.0 scale.

On dean’s list

Erin Conley of Emporia has been named to the Concordia College Dean’s Honor List. Conley is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Conley of Emporia. To qualify for this designation, Conley has to carry a minimum of 12 semester credits and a grade point average of at least a 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.

To teacher academy

Anita Harris and Jessica Sichel from the Emporia school district and Carmen Clark from southern Lyon County got to experience what it takes to be a teacher at the Kansas Future Teacher Academy in Emporia June 24-28. The academy consisted of 39 students and was held on the Emporia State University campus.

Students were accepted into the academy based upon their academic standing, involvement in school and community activities, and interest in exploring a career in teaching.

Participants were involved in numerous activities during the week, many focused on opportunities in education, problem-solving and leadership skills, personal goal setting and the use of technology in education. The students toured the National Teachers Hall of Fame and met 1994 inductee Rich Ruffalo, a former teacher who set new world records in track and field at the Paralympic Games after losing his eyesight.
