Holman wills Burlington to win over Cherryvale

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Burlington’s Becca Holman led the Lady Wildcats with 26 points and eight steals in a 64-57 victory over Cherryvale Tuesday night.

Burlington coach Doug Stewart said Holman’s effort was the key factor in the game.

“Becca Holman just would not let us lose,” Stewart said. “She attacked the basket and created offense when we were at key points in the game.”

Cherryvale continued to fight throughout the game and pulled to within six by the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Burlington shot 10-of-18 from the free-throw line to maintain its lead.

“It was good to see us close out the game after Cherryvale made a couple of solid runs at us,” Stewart said.

Herington grabbed an early lead and kept it, outscoring Lincoln in every quarter of Monday’s nine-point victory.

The Lady Railers jumped out to a 13-9 advantage in the first quarter and never relinquished the lead from there.

“I don’t feel like it was our best performance by any means,” Herington coach Jayson Emig said. “It’s definitely not as good as we played against Mission Valley last week, but the girls did enough to win.”

Emig was especially happy with his team’s first and third quarters after challenging his players to pick up their game in those two stretches.

The Lady Railers have now outscored their opponents in those two quarters in the last two games.

Herington’s Kristin Kleinschmidt led all scorers, posting 22 points. Chanell Makovec (12) and Crysta Brockmeier (10) added double figures.

The Lady Railers (7-6, 4-1) will celebrate their Homecoming Friday at home against Pomona.
