Banzhaf’s buzzer-beater lifts Lyndon to victory

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Derek Banzhaf completed a late comeback for Lyndon, draining a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 37-34 victory over Alma-Wabaunsee.

With the game tied, Lyndon coach Michael Massey called a timeout to set up his team’s final play against a man defense.

When Alma-Wabaunsee came out in a zone, the Tigers adjusted on the fly, with Banzhaf finding an opening for the final shot.

Lyndon had to rally late, as the team trailed by five points with two minutes left.

“We decided to finally pick it up on defense,” Massey said. “We made the plays down the stretch.”

The Tigers jumped out to a 15-10 first-quarter lead before struggling in the second quarter. Alma-Wabaunsee took a 22-20 advantage into the break.

Alex Wendling and Shea Kirsop led Lyndon with eight points each, while Justin Bartkowski added seven.

Crest boys 55,

Hartford 44

The Hartford boys basketball team fell to Crest, 55-44, Tuesday night at Hartford.

The Jaguars started off sluggish, scoring just nine points in the first quarter.

“They came out more aggressive than we did,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said. “I think Crest did a much better job getting the ball inside for easy looks throughout the game.”

Four players scored in double digits for Crest, and Ewy said it was the result of better rebounding and getting the ball to open players.

“I thought they outworked us on the glass tonight,” Ewy said. “They’re real balanced and we’re hitting the guys that are open.”

Blake Edwards scored a game-high 18 points for Hartford, while Scott Gardner added 12.
