Colton Stueve put in a jumper with 1 second remaining to give Olpe an improbable 58-57 victory over Northern Heights Monday in a battle of two ranked teams.
The Eagles found themselves in a nearly impossible situation late, as Heights held a one-point lead and possession of the ball with 5 seconds remaining.
In addition to that, Olpe had only four team fouls, meaning the Eagles couldn’t foul to get the ball back.
The Eagles’ only option was for a steal, and — against all odds — they got exactly that.
Andrew Haag tipped the Heights inbounds pass, and the ball trickled its way towards the Olpe basket.
Olpe’s Colton Stueve scooped up the ball and spun to shoot the game-winning shot.
“It seemed like forever,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “It seemed like he had three pump-fakes and then did a 360, but he got it to go in.”
Heights called timeout to set up a last-second play, but the inbounds pass was tipped by the Eagles’ Seth Pargman.
The victory completed a comeback for Olpe, as the No. 1-ranked team in 1A trailed 33-24 at half.
“We didn’t play our game in several facets,” Schmidt said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, and we didn’t get back on defense. We knew we could play a lot better and we were only down nine.”
Olpe used a quick third-quarter run to cut the deficit to three, and the game went back and forth after that.
“Fortunately,” Schmidt said, “the ball bounced our way at the end.”
Seth Pargman led Olpe, scoring 16 points. Cole Krueger added 12 and Stueve had nine.
Heights, the 5th-ranked team in Class 3A, was paced by Jake Weakley’s 23 points. Cody Neidfeldt contributed 16, including a floater that gave Heights its one-point lead in the last minute.
