Wolf Creek offers retirement incentives

Saturday, January 27, 2007

A retirement incentive program is underway at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant as part of a plan to build what the company calls a “workforce of the future,” according to a news release from the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation.

The WCNOC board of directors approved the voluntary retirement incentive program for a limited number of employees. The program involves age and years of service requirement changes for retirement and an enhanced medical benefit for the retirees.

The change also helps the company reach its long-term staffing goals.

“Approximately 150 people are eligible to participate, but because of business needs, only about 75 will be able to take advantage of the offer,” communications specialist Susan Maycock said in the release.

The company also intends to retain experienced, knowledgeable employees and to identify positions that are essential to maintaining critical skills and the knowledge required to operate the plant safely. The plan also includes provisions to create advancement openings for “strong leaders of the future,” the release stated.

The “Workforce of the Future” program is an essential piece of the company’s business plan, which includes other initiatives, including improvements to the compensation packages of non-bargaining unit workers and continuing to improve leadership.
