The butterflies weren’t as bad for the Madison girls this time around as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 47-31 victory over Chase County Thursday in the Lyon County League Tournament.
Madison looked more relaxed after getting the first-game jitters out of the way in a 60-54 loss to Lyndon on Monday at White Auditorium.
“It was our first game of the season here, and a lot of us hadn’t played in this gym,” Madison freshman Morgan Stout said. “We were really worked up and nervous.”
It wasn’t the case Thursday, as Madison grabbed a 13-6 first-quarter advantage and never looked back, pushing the lead to as many as 23 points.
Stout was the one that literally got it all started for Madison.
The guard scored the first six points for her team, then followed that by performing well at the beginning of each subsequent quarter.
She had Madison’s first seven points in the third quarter and then the fourth quarter, ending her night with 22 points.
“I knew I needed to play better than I did on Monday,” Stout said. “I was also hitting in warm-ups.”
Despite the strong start, Madison didn’t take control until the second half. The Lady Bulldogs led just 23-14 at the break.
“I was pretty happy with the way we handled them in the first half,” Chase County coach Toby Baker said.
Stout had nine points in the third quarter as Madison went on a 13-4 run to take a 36-18 lead.
Though Madison extended its advantage in the fourth, Chase County never stopped fighting. Sequoia Shull hit a three, and Heather Whitney followed with a a three-point play to give Chase County a 6-0 spurt to end the game.
“This team hasn’t quit in the 12 games we’ve been here, and we’re not going to start doing that now,” Baker said. “We’re going to battle until it’s over.”
Tera Titus had nine points for Madison, while Shelby Buster and Jessica Hudson both added six.
Sam Archer and Shull paced Chase County, scoring nine points each.
Madison (6-5) will face Lebo at noon Saturday in the fifth-place game.
