Waverly efficient offensively in 38-34 victory over Lebo

Waverly's Megan Steward gets fouled by Lebo's Shelby Robke Tuesday afternoon during their game at White Auditorium. In the foreground is Lebo's Tabitha Frye.

The Lebo girls basketball team put up 55 shots against Waverly in Tuesday’s second-round Lyon County League Tournament matchup, but the Lady Wolves could only manage 12 makes out of all those shots for 22-percent shooting, as Waverly defeated Lebo, 38-34.

Waverly only made one more shot (13) than Lebo, but the Lady Bulldogs were much more efficient on the offensive end, hitting 13 of 26 (50 percent) shots from the field to win the low-scoring affair.

“You have to give Waverly credit for their defense, because we didn’t execute offensively at all,” Lebo coach Mike McDougald said. “We were tentative on our shots and didn’t get the ball inside. You have to give Waverly credit on that too. They came to play.”

However, even with all its offensive struggles, Lebo managed to keep the game close deep into the fourth quarter.

Waverly (7-3 LCL) led by as many as nine points in the second half after it had extended a 19-13 halftime lead out to 26-17 midway through the third quarter. But over the game’s next 6 1/2 minutes, Lebo (5-5 LCL) went on a 10-2 run that was capped by a put-back by Tabitha Frye off a missed free throw from Nickole Presley that made it a one-point game at 28-27 with 6:05 left.

“This is the third time we’ve had to play them, and each game has been just exactly like this one — we’d get a lead and then can’t put them away,” Waverly coach Dennis Tyson said. “That’s to their credit, that they can come back and not give up.”

At that point, though, Lebo turned to its trusted late-game free-throw shooting, as the Lady Bulldogs hit six free throws — Brittany Hase went 5-of-6 from the charity line — down the stretch to keep the Lady Wolves at a distance.

“We’re kind of known for our free-throw shooting at the end of games,” Tyson said. “We usually hit those to put the game away, and basically that’s what happened. Free throws won it at the end.”

Megan Steward was a force all game long for Waverly, as the 5-foot-11 junior used her superior size to grab a game-high 15 rebounds to go with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

“She’s very tough to stop,” McDougald said. “She rebounds the ball well, and we couldn’t keep her off the boards. I thought offensively, we did a pretty good job of denying her the ball at times, which was part of our focus, but she’s just relentless inside and beats you to the boards.”

Presley led Lebo with 10 points, while Lauren Schlesener had 11 boards.

Waverly advanced to play top-seeded Olpe in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The loss sent Lebo to the consolation bracket, where it will match up with Marais des Cygnes Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Chase County 31

The Flinthills girls overcame a somewhat sluggish start against Chase County and went on to roll the Lady Bulldogs, 68-31, in the second round of the Lyon County League Tournament.

Leading by just five points at 25-20 late in the second quarter, Flinthills started to get hot, as the Lady Mustangs closed the half on a 10-1 run to go into the break ahead 35-21.

Then, out of the intermission, Flinthills (8-2 LCL) proved why it was the tournament’s second seed and the No. 7-ranked team in Class 2A. The Lady Mustangs went on a 25-6 scoring tear that stretched into the fourth quarter to end any and all thoughts of an upset by Chase County (1-10 LCL), the tournament’s 10th seed.

Flinthills ended the game by outscoring Chase County 33-10 in the second half.

Three Lady Mustangs scored in double figures, led by Caley Onek’s game-high 17 points. Deedra Baker added 15 points and Lacey Breech chipped in 11. Chase County was led in scoring by Sam Archer and Marie Hunt, who had seven points each.

Though many brackets have the game listed at 4:30 p.m., Flinthills will in fact play third-seeded Lyndon at 4 on Friday in the semifinals. Chase County will face No. 6-seed Madison at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Olpe girls 84, MdCV 8

Olpe’s Katie Moyer came off the bench to hit eight 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 28 points as the top-seeded Lady Eagles proved to be much too much for No. 9-seeded Marais des Cygnes Valley to handle in an 84-8 Olpe victory.

Moyer hit a pair of threes in every quarter, hitting all but one of Olpe’s three-point shots.

The Lady Eagles (10-0 LCL) stormed out to a 26-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, as Marais des Cygnes Valley (2-9 LCL) did not make a basket until 15 seconds into the second period.

By halftime, Olpe owned a 48-4 advantage, and it simply cruised from there on out. Sammantha Maley added 15 points for Olpe while Kayla Krueger scored 12. In all, 10 players scored for the Lady Eagles.

Olpe moved on to face Waverly at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Marais des Cygnes Valley will face Lebo at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the consolation bracket.
