Time for Angel Food Orders

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Orders are being taken for the February distribution of Angel Food Ministries food done through the First Church of the Nazarene, 2931 West 24th Ave., and the First Presbyterian Church of Emporia, 802 Commercial St.

Angel Food provides a monthly box of food at a reduced price of $25. Each box contains approximately enough food — meat, vegetables, and other basics — to feed a family of four for one week.

Orders may be placed at either church. However, food must be picked up at the church where the order has been placed.

Food must be paid for in advance, and only cash, money orders or food stamps will be accepted.

Orders are underway at the Nazarene Church. The next order periods will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Orders for the Presbyterian’s distribution will be taken from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Spanish translators will be available on Friday and Saturday, according to Mike Sorsen, pastor. More information about the distribution may be seen at the churches’ Websites at www.fpc@emporia.org. or www.emporianazarene.com.

The Presbyterian pickup site is at Fourth Avenue and Merchant Street at the Spic ‘n Span Cleaners building. Use of space at the cleaners has been donated by Max and Sharon Stewart.

Food must be picked up at the time designated by the church and buyers must have their receipts to pick up food. Pickup time will be printed on the Nazarene receipt. The Presbyterian pickup date is expected to be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, unless weather or unexpected changes occur.

Buyers need to provide large boxes to pick up the food.

The February box will contain:

Three pounds of breaded chicken tenders, 1.5 pounds of St. Louis style ribs, four pounds of chicken thighs, one pound of ground beef, 2 pounds of breaded chicken breast fillets, 10 four-ounce beef burritos, 12 ounces of smoked sausage, 20-count container of Old El Paso taco shells, one pound of pinto beans, one pound of rice, one box of corn muffin mix, 20 ounces of shoestring French fries, one pound of sugar snap peas, one pound of four-way mixed vegetables, 15 oz. of breakfast cereal, one dozen eggs, and a 27-ounce pie.

Purchase of a box entitles the buyer to purchase any of four “February Specials.”

The specials are:

Box 1 — Four 8-oz. ribeye steaks and four 8-oz. T-bones for $18

Box 2 — Two pounds of chicken wings, two pounds of tenders, two pounds of breaded frying chicken, two pounds of chicken strips and two pounds of chicken breast for $18

Box 3 — Four 6-oz. top sirloins, four 4-oz. steakburgers, one pound of beef back ribs, one pound of short ribs, and one pound of Italian sausage for $18
