Temporary board member on hold until next month

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

A temporary member of the Emporia board of education is expected to be sworn in at the board's next meeting, Feb. 14.

Board president Grant Riles said that he had talked with several past board members and asked them to consider serving the remainder of the term left vacant by Jeff Larson, who resigned to become a district judge.

Riles earlier had been given the task of talking with recent former members to find a temporary, experience replacement to serve until newly elected members take office on July 1.

Superintendent John Heim and Board Clerk Norma Stinnett have made arrangements for County Clerk Karen Hartenbower to attend the meeting and swear in the temporary member after the vote is taken.

Riles said he has been in contact with recent board members Paul McNabb, Roger Hartsook, Carol Schaeffer and Mike Heffron, and has asked that they consider serving the abbreviated term.

Board members voted to accept a report from the Capital Outlay Committee for consideration, including a $1,200,000 project to add four elementary school classrooms. Village Elementary School is likely to receive the additional space.

More information about the board meeting will be published in Thursday's Gazette.
