OVER the past couple of years when people talked about Emporia State University basketball, chances are the conversation centered around the women’s championship teams.
But this year, the buzz has been about the men’s program and their great 16-0 start, which is the best in the men’s program.
ESU men’s coach David Moe deserves a pat on the back for making changes in his program at the end of last season.
While he had talented players, some of them were more interested in playing as individuals instead of playing as team. The result was a mediocre 18-13 record. Moe decided to excuse some of the players and focus his efforts on the players who were coachable.
The transformation has been impressive and the record speaks for itself.
In sports, and especially in the professional leagues where so much attention is focused on key players, it is nice to be reminded that sports is really about teamwork and when athletes play as a team they will have better results.
Catch both of ESU’s ranked teams tonight at White Auditorium. It’s good family fun.
