A flood of last-minute filings on Monday and Tuesday have guaranteed a competitive election for the Emporia school board and almost forced a primary.
Eight candidates are now on the ballot for the four seats open on the Emporia school board. Leslie Rathke-Seeley, Angie Schreiber and Glen Strickland filed for the race on Monday. Michael Helbert and Arden “Ardie” Lauxman filed today before the noon deadline.
Those five join challengers Ty Wheeler and Brent Windsor and incumbent Grant Riles, who filed earlier. A ninth candidate would have required a primary election to narrow the field.
In the North Lyon County school district, Position 7 became a competitive race between Wayne Symmonds and Greg Larson. Symmonds filed on Monday. Meanwhile, Position 3 gained its first and only candidate today as Bill McClellan filed for the seat.
A primary election will be needed for Southern Lyon County’s Position 2 after John O’Connor filed for the school board today. He will run against Kenny Hamman and Donald Roberts.
Finally, Troy Greenwood filed on Monday to run for the Americus city council. He and Linda Stringer are the only two candidates for the three open spots on the council.
