Olpe uses 27-point 3rd-quarter spurt to outpace Burlingame, win LCL title

Saturday, January 20, 2007

The Olpe Eagles boys basketball team kept its undefeated season intact with a decisive league-clinching 82-47 victory on the road at Burlingame Friday night.

Olpe’s duo of Seth Pargman and Cole Krueger paced the sharpshooting Eagles with a combined 28 points, with Jordan Pargman and Dallas Burenheide each contributing nine. A total of 11 Eagles players scored in the contest.

Burlingame’s physical play kept the score interesting in the first half against the state’s top-ranked team. A whopping 17 fouls were called in the first quarter alone.

“They just never let us play,” Burlingame coach Creighton Winters said of the closely-called game.

Down 10 points at the break, Winters was still optimistic for his team’s chances.

“We came at them,” he said. “We felt like we were in the ballgame.”

A 27-point explosion from the Eagles coming out of the locker room proved otherwise, as Olpe flexed its might from beyond the arc.

“Olpe’s 3-point shooting in the third quarter was the difference,” Winters said. “They showed why they’re the No. 1 team in the state.”

Stout defense from the Eagles limited the Bearcats to just four points in the fourth quarter as Olpe rolled on to its 12th win of the year, wrapping up the Lyon County League in the process. Burlingame falls to 6-3 with the loss.

The defensive game drew 31 fouls and 27 turnovers, with Flinthills giving the ball up 18 times.

The nip-and-tuck contest used all of regulation to decide its two-point outcome. The margin at halftime was four points and at the third quarter’s conclusion, just one point.

Leading the scoring for the Tigers was Alex Wendling’s 12 points, as he finished 4-of-7 from the floor. He was joined by teammate Kade Neilson’s 10 points. The Tigers shot 42 percent from the floor as a team and were 3-of-8 in three-point territory.

S. Coffey Co. boys 62,

Hamilton 35

Matt Harmon led all scoring with 17 points, joining two other Southern Coffey County players in double figures as the Titans downed the Hamilton Tigers 62-35 in the SCC Mid-Season Tournament on Friday.

It was the second straight game that Harmon led his team with 17 points.

Taking advantage of 20 fouls committed by the Tigers, the Titans shot 17-of-26 from the free throw line with Harmon shooting 5-of-7 from the stripe.

The final score was not entirely accurate of the earlier stages of the game, though, as Hamilton’s determination kept the score close. A 19-11 Titans advantage at the break seemed fragile after the Tigers’ defense held SCC to just six second-quarter points.

SCC had other plans, however, and came out firing for the last two periods of action. Ringing up 23 points in the third quarter and 20 in the fourth, the contest grew quickly out of hand and out of reach for the struggling Tigers.
