ESU recital Saturday
The Emporia State University Department of Music presents Michael Davidson, trombone, with Ruth Krusemark, piano, in a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Hall on the ESU campus. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $3. Information: 341-543.
Mr. Lincoln goes to Gridley
The 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, will visit the Gridley Branch of the Coffey County Library at 7 p.m., Jan. 31.
Lincoln, portrayed by Dale E. Jirik of Topeka, will talk about his childhood, parents, war years and presidency. A drawing for books about Lincoln will be held after the program. Refreshments will be provided by the Gridley Friends of the Library. The Friends also will hold a book sale, with all proceeds to be used to purchase a digital camera that will be available for checkout to patrons.
Jirik is a volunteer for various Topeka organizations, including the Kansas History Museum and is widely known for the programs he presents about Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower and George Washington. Jirik is a member of the boards of the Lincoln Forum, Gettysburg, Pa., the Countryside United Methodist Church, Kaw Valley Catbackers and the Kansas Conference on Social Welfare.
He grew up and graduated from high school in Abilene and from Kansas State University with degrees in history and psychology. During World War II, he served in the Naval Air Corps. He then received his master’s degree in social work from the University of Missouri. He worked for the State of Kansas for 36 years as admissions director to State Mental Health Facilities before he retired in 1986.
