Olpe girls win matchup of unbeatens over Lyndon

In a much-anticipated matchup between two undefeated teams, the Olpe girls dominated from the get-go in a 72-41 victory over Lyndon in Olpe.
The Lady Eagles, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, outscored the Lady Tigers 19-4 in the first quarter and 24-11 in the second quarter to take a healthy 43-15 lead into the halftime break.
“I think it was key for us to get off to a good start,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “Our kids were really tuned in, and we played a very good first half.”
Olpe won the second half, 29-26, despite playing different combinations and substituting many of its bench players into the game.
Megan Woods led the Lady Eagles with 18 points. Kayla Krueger added 14, while Katie Moyer had 12.
Krista Banzhaf paced Lyndon, scoring a game-high 19 points in the loss.
Olpe improved to 11-0 with the win.
“I think we really played well at both ends,” Nelson said. “Defensively, we were very active. On offense, we moved the ball and shot well.”
Lyndon — ranked No. 8 in Class 2A — dropped to 9-1 with the loss.

For the Madison Lady Bulldogs, Tuesday night’s victory didn’t come easily.
Tied at the half, both teams fought for the lead throughout the third and fourth quarters. But it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Lady Bulldogs pulled away, mustering up an eight-point lead.
“I applaud Madison,” Flinthills coach Mark Womacks said. “They were the team that played with heart, grit, and determination. They wanted to win, and it showed.”
Carrying the Bulldogs was freshman Shelby Buster, who scored a game-high 17 points. Buster dominated inside with 13 rebounds and three assists.
Leading the scoring for the Mustangs was Caley Onek, who had 16 points.
“Unfortunately, we played how we prepared for this game,” Womacks said. “We had a very poor practice going in.”
Madison improved its record to 6-5, while Flinthills dropped to 10-2 with the loss.

Ending the first half with an 11-point lead, Lebo went on to claim victory against Hartford in Tuesday night’s game.
Taking charge from the early minutes, the Lady Wolves maintained a steady pattern of offense, outscoring the Jaguars in every quarter.
With an impressive game-high 19 points from Nickole Presley, the Lady Wolves were able to take down the Jaguars and finish the game with a 15-point victory.

Burlington girls 46, Council Grove 21
The Burlington girls used stout defense and added enough offense to defeat Council Grove 46-21 in the first round of the Burlington Invitational Tournament on Tuesday night.
Burlington used a 16-4 second quarter to distance itself from Council Grove at halftime, 26-12, and the Lady Wildcats only allowed Council Grove to score nine points the rest of the way to take the 25-point victory.
“I thought we had an excellent effort, especially on defense,” Burlington coach Doug Stewart said. “We knew that the inside game was Council Grove’s strength, and we did a nice job shutting that down.”
Becca Holman led the way for Burlington with 12 points, five steals and five assists. Allyx Barnhart added 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.
