The Martin Luther King, Kr. celebration that was scheduled for Sunday night at First Christian Church has been canceled due to poor weather.
Al Slappy, one of the even't organizers, said that poor road conditions kept the keynote speaker from being able to reach Emporia. The speaker, the Rev. Gregory Gray, is a Lawrence pastor who also runs a mission in Kansas City. Gray was in Kansas City on Sunday when icy conditions grew especially bad.
Organizers had hoped to start at 6 p.m. today. The event will be rescheduled, but no date has been set.
"We'll try to get something together for next month during Black History Month," Slappy said.
