Emporia High wrestlers drop duel matches to Paola, Gardner-Edgerton

Thursday, January 11, 2007

The Emporia High wrestling squad dropped a pair of duel matches to Gardner-Edgerton and Paola Wednesday night in Paola.

Paola defeated the Spartans 42-24 while Gardner-Edgerton won its matchup over EHS, 46-26.

Against Paola, Jared Dakin (112 pounds), Tavo Dikin (125 pounds), Levi Lapping (135 pounds) and Bryce Shaver (160 pounds) all picked up victories in their matches to go along with two forfeit wins by Mark Kolmer (189 pounds) and Carlos Casiano (119 pounds).

Dakin earned Emporia’s only fall against Paola, as he pinned Tanner Bunkin to the mat just 30.7 seconds into the match.

Dikin’s bout against Mitch Mosley was closely contested heading into the third period, with Dikin holding a 4-0 advantage. But then a reversal, two takedowns and a two-point caution gave Dikin a flurry of points, and he ended up winning the match, 12-4.

Shaver won by technical fall over Seth Heniker, going up 10-0 after the first period and bringing the match to a close with a three-point near fall in the second that ended the match with Shaver leading 15-0.

Paola, though, was too much for the Spartans, as the Panthers won five matches by pins over their Emporia competition.

Justin Rose (112 pounds) and Sal Tovar (119 pounds) got Emporia off to a good start against Gardner-Edgerton, as both wrestlers pinned their opponents just seconds into the first period, but much like Paola, it was not enough to overcome four Gardner-Edgerton victories by pins.

Besides Rose and Tovar’s victories, Dikin finished 2-0 on the day thanks to a come-from-behind 9-3 win over Kyle Hess, with Mark Kolmer also picking up a 20-6 win in his bout.
