Child is injured in car-bike accident

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

A child was taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Hospital after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car coming out of the alley beside Broadview Towers, 110 West Sixth Ave.

Dominic Thach, 11, of Emporia apparently was riding the bicycle west on the sidewalk in front of the building and entered the alleyway when the car, a Buick driven by Michael Holloway, 22, of Emporia was preparing to turn onto Sixth Avenue.

Emergency workers with the Lyon County-Emporia ambulance service placed the boy on a spinal board before placing him on a wheeled stretcher and loading him into the ambulance.

The boy was not admitted to the hospital. The driver of the car was not injured.

A large convex mirror was set up adjacent to the alley about five years ago to help drivers spot pedestrians, bicycle riders and other vehicles, which are difficult to see because the Broadview Towers building and parked cars along the street block the view east of the alley.
