Re-enactment at library
The Flint Hills Genealogical Society, in cooperation with the Emporia Public Library, will be host for a Civil War-era re-enactment at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library’s large meeting room.
Herschel and Jacque Stroud of Topeka will portray a Civil War doctor, Major Albert G. Huffman, and his wife, Pamelia, who served as a nurse. The Huffmans lived in Kentucky during the war but moved to Peabody after the war ended.
According to a news release, the performance will open minds to the ailments suffered by soldiers on the battlefields and the treatment they received.
The Strouds also will offer a display of equipment, soldier’s gear and household items.
The Strouds are performing in honor of Emporia’s 150th birthday.
Debaters Win Again
Two Emporia High School debaters finished the Kansas Debate Coaches Invitational Tournament this week as the highest-ranked 5A team in the tournament and the only non-6A team finishing in the top eight.
The team of Mary Yanik, senior, and Alex Bonnet, junior, finished sixth overall and Emporia High School was the fourth-ranked school in the competition, according to information from Scott Bonnet, coach.
Debate coaches from across the state selected Yanik and Bonnet for the annual tournament, a competition for the best debaters in all classes in Kansas.
Yanik also was honored as the eighth-place overall individual speaker in the tournament.
Almost 200 Kansas high schools competed in policy debate.
