Horizon Award
Kevin Smiley, the son of Rusty and Sherry Smiley of Emporia, was named a 2006 Kansas Horizon Award winner from the Kansas State Department of Education.
Smiley is teaches eighth-grade social studies at Monticello Trails Middle Schools in Shawnee.
The award recognizes exemplary first-year teachers the elementary and secondary classrooms of Kansas. Each school district may nominate one teacher. The state is divided into five zones, with each zone providing one state winner.
Smiley is a graduate of Emporia High School and Emporia State University.
Pittsburg graduate
Robyn G. Brown of Emporia received a bachelor of science in technology degree last month at Pittsburg State University’s winter commencement.
Attends conference
Emporia eighth-grader Cody Lindquist, the son of Christy Linquist, attended the National Young Leaders State Conference Oct. 236-27 in Tulsa, Okla. The conference was designed to help young scholars examine and assess their own leadership abilities and skills.
The program is a project of the Congressional Youth Leadership Conference.
Cody was nominated to attend the conference by Ginger Lewman, who was his seventh-grade enrichment teacher at Emporia Middle School.
Cody is involved in school government, basketball, football, baseball and a church youth group. He plans a medical career.
He said he enjoyed the conference and looks forward to applying some of the leadership skills he learned there.
He will now be eligible to attend conferences at the high-school level.
On the team
Tyler Robinson of Emporia competed in November at the Region III American Criminal Justice Competition in Jefferson City, Mo. He was a member of the team from Garden City Community College.
Graduates from school
Bradley S. Hoover of Neosho Rapids received a associate of applied science degree in electric power and distribution Dec. 16 in the winter commencement ceremony 16 for Manhattan Area Technical College.
The ceremony was held in McCain Auditorium on the Kansas State University campus.
On dean’s list
Sheena N. Walters of Emporia was included on the dean’s lostt for the fall semester at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. To be on the list, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.50.
