Lebo’s Gillespie scores 24 points to lead Wolves to 3OT victory over Burlingame

Saturday, January 6, 2007

Lebo’s Aaron Gillespie scored three points in the final four minutes, leading Lebo to 72-68 victory in a triple-overtime thriller.

After leading by seven at half, Lebo watched its advantage slip away as Burlingame outscored the Wolves, 16-9, in the third quarter. The teams stayed tied at the end of regulation, the first overtime and the second overtime.

In OT No. 3, Lebo’s went on an 8-4 spurt to take control of the game.

Gillespie led all scorers with 24 points. Cameron Smith (15), Taylor Barker (14) and Bryan Linsey (13) all hit double figures for Lebo.

Chris Patterson scored a team-high 20 points for Burlingame.

The game was a battle of attrition in the end. Despite going three overtimes, Burlingame played just six players, while Lebo only had seven participate.

Olpe boys 59, Marais des Cygnes Valley 49

The Olpe Eagles began the new year with a victory, defeating the Marais des Cygnes Valley Trojans by 10 points.

“We had spurts where we played really well,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said, “but we were pretty inconsistent.”

Even with their inconsistency, the Eagles entered the second half leading by eight points, and the Trojans never recovered.

The Eagles’ victory was due in part to Cole Krueger, who scored a team-high 15 points.

“Cole played a good game tonight,” Schmidt said. “He was aggressive and had really active defense.”

Northern Hts. boys 101, Pomona 64

The Northern Heights boys used a flurry of transition points to top the century mark in scoring, taking the 37-point victory over Pomona.

After rolling to a 54-42 halftime lead, Heights scored an astounding 38 points in the third quarter, outscoring Pomona by 22 in that frame alone.

“We were able to push the ball and run the floor,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “Our depth really wore on them. They just ran out of gas, and we ran away with the game.”

Rick Hobson led the Wildcats, scoring 33 points. Cody Neidfeldt and Haydon Parks added 14, while Derek Parks had 11.

Heights received 63 of its 101 points from post players.

Lyndon boys 51,

Hartford 45

In their first game after a long Christmas break, the Lyndon Tigers went on to defeat the Hartford Jaguars in Friday night’s game.

“I thought both teams played extremely well tonight,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said. “They were just a little better at shooting their free throws.”

Unfortunately, valuable players were lost on both sides of the court. Lyndon — which had Justin Bartowski, Quinton Testerman, and Alex Wendling foul out — accumulated 25 team fouls, while Waverly — which lost Cody Barrett and Storm Cartee — had 40 team fouls.

With the loss of three players, Lyndon’s Shea Kirsop stepped up to the challenge. Kirsop led his team with 13 points, making him the highest scoring player.

Waverly boys 61,

Flinthills 37

Waverly grabbed an early lead and kept it in a 24-point win over Flinthills.

The game began neck-and-neck. At the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs only trailed by one; however, they were never able to gain a lead.

The Bulldogs’ Casey Church, Denton Chapman, and Matt Coursen led their team to victory. Together, the three nearly outscored the Mustangs with 35 combined points.

The Mustangs’ Kiel Reimann was the night’s leading scorer with 16 points.

Gazette sports intern Erica Bennett and sports reporter Jesse Newell contributed to this report.
