Herington rally comes up short against Osage City; Lady Indians win, 59-47

Saturday, January 6, 2007

Despite a furious rally, the Herington girls fell short in a 59-47 loss to Osage City.

The Lady Railers trailed 44-26 entering the fourth quarter before making their move. They cut the deficit to 10 but couldn’t get any closer with time running out.

“We made a pretty good run,” Herington coach Jayson Emig said, “but then we had to start fouling.”

A key for Osage City was its ability to get to the free-throw line. The Lady Indians were 14 of 22 from the charity stripe, while Herington was just 4-for-5.

Miranda Bryan led Osage City with 20 points, while Katie Buenger added 13 and Kady Paul had 12.

Kristin Kleinschmidt paced Herington with 18 points, and Kaleigh Schneider contributed 12.

First-team all-league player Crysta Brockmeier was held to just six points.

Osage City was steady in its scoring, posting 14 points in the first quarter followed by 15 in each of the final three frames.

Emig said he hoped to see that kind of scoring effort from his team.

“We’re young,” Emig said, “and when we learn to be consistent, we’ll be fine.”

Lyndon girls 58,

Hartford 33

Lyndon outscored Hartford in each quarter, cruising to the 25-point victory.

Stephanie Goetz started on a roll for the Lady Tigers, scoring 11 of her 13 points in the first half.

Krista Banzhaf added 11, while Ashley Persinger contributed 10.

Hartford was led by Jessica Cartee, who scored 11 points, which included three 3-pointers.

No other Lady Jaguar had more than four points.

Hartford was slowed by its 25 turnovers in the contest.

Pomona girls 67,

Northern Heights 52

The Northern Heights girls couldn’t overcome an early deficit in the 15-point loss to Pomona.

The Lady Wildcats were especially hurt by a slow second quarter, where they were outscored 18-7 by Pomona. The spurt gave the Lady Indians a 35-20 halftime advantage.

“We had a tough game tonight,” Northern Heights coach Tim Riemann said. “I need to do a better job of getting my team prepared to play and playing fundamental basketball.”

Amy Lee led Heights with 18 points. Sarah Boline added 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

S. Coff. County girls 54, Pleasanton 43

Casie Combs led Southern Coffey County with 13 points as the Lady Titans took an 11-point victory over Pleasanton.

After taking a 24-23 lead into halftime, SCC outscored Pleasanton 15-6 in the third quarter to take control.

“We did a better job of shooting the ball this game, and I was pleased with the effort on the boards,” SCC coach Jeff True said. “We did a better job boxing out than we had been doing.”

The Lady Titans prevailed despite having several players sick with the flu.

LaNesha Harvey added 12 points, while Hannah Brooks had 10 points and six steals.

SCC (5-2, 2-0) plays host to Crest on Tuesday.

Burlington girls 57, Caney Valley 19

The Burlington girls used their press to establish an early lead in their 38-point victory over Caney Valley.

The Lady Wildcats posted a 24-8 run in the first quarter to get things rolling.

The defense would only get better from there. Caney Valley scored 3 in the second quarter, 6 in the third, and 0 in the fourth.

“We did a nice job defensively,” Burlington coach Doug Stewart said, “and are beginning to understand what takes to play at a high level for an entire game.”

Becca Holman led the Wildcats, scoring 18 points — with 14 of those coming in the first half. Heather Eddings added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lebo girls 49, Burlingame 28

Lebo’s defense held Burlingame to 17 points over the first three quarters in a 21-point Lady Wolves’ victory.

Meanwhile, Lebo’s offense stayed consistent throughout the game. After scoring 10 in the first quarter, the Lady Wolves scored 13 in each of the next three frames.

Morgan Laflin led Lebo with 14 points. Lauren Schlesener added double figures with 10.

Meghan Atchison and Marcie Love paced Burlingame with nine points apiece.

Flinthills girls 60, Waverly 35

The Flinthills Lady Mustangs led from start to finish throughout their 25-point victory.

Flinthills began Friday night’s game with a lead as they ended the first half with a seven-point lead against the Waverly Lady Bulldogs. Entering the second half, they maintained their lead, outscoring Waverly 27-18.

Leading the Mustangs to their victory was Caley Onek, scoring 20 points with six assists. However, it was Erin Dragoo who helped the Mustangs to their initial lead, scoring five points right off the bat. Dragoo also had seven rebounds.
