The Governor’s One-Shot Turkey Hunt wants young hunters. Hurry, there’s still time.

You might just be lucky enough to win a great Kansas turkey hunting adventure.

Since 2002, a youth hunting program has been incorporated into the Governor’s Annual One Shot Turkey Hunt, held in Butler County, at El Dorado. Six youths from around the state of Kansas will be selected to participate in this year’s hunt.

In order to qualify, youth participants must have successfully completed a state hunter education course, be between the ages of 12 and 18, and possess a current Kansas hunting license if they are 16 years of age or older.

They also must be accompanied by a parent or an adult sponsor who will stay with them at the event except during the time they will be hunting with a guide. Each of the six youths chosen for the hunt must attend events on all three days and evenings of the hunt.

In addition, candidates for the hunt must complete and submit an application form by Jan. 15. The six participants then will be selected by a committee representing the Governor’s Annual One Shot Turkey Hunt organization.

You can request an application forms by contacting: Gene White, 218 West Central, Box 308, El Dorado, KS 67042, phone (316) 321-1710; or John Moore, 304 East 12th, El Dorado, KS 67042, phone (316) 320-7708.

Since time is so short, you might prefer to use an e-mail version of the application and can request one from John Moore at jmoore72@cox.net

The Governor’s Turkey Hunt will provide the following to each winner:

• A guide for each participant.

• Tickets and passes to all the events for the parent/sponsor and youth.

• One turkey permit

• Special section in the program to identify the Youth Hunting Program.

• Tickets and passes to future hunt events (does not include turkey hunting).

• When a participant reaches their 21st birthday, they can choose to join the Past Shooter and Guides Association. Application will be required.

• The Hunt will set up a special awards section for the youth hunters and their guides.

This year, the Governor’s One-Shot Turkey Hunt will take place April 12-14.

Any youth who meets the eligibility criteria is encouraged to apply for a chance to participate in this great outdoor adventure. What an opportunity to experience Kansas turkey hunting at its finest and have an exciting time to boot.

The Kansas Governor’s Annual One Shot Turkey Hunt has been recognized throughout the United States as one of the finest such hunts in the nation since its conception in 1987. More than 80 celebrity hunters also are invited each spring to participate in the festivities.

Another important part of the Governor’s One Shot Turkey Hunt event is the scholarship program. College students who are studying wildlife management or natural resource conservation are eligible to win. The annual One Shot Banquet Auction raises money for this scholarship. For more information about the Willis Scholarship Foundation, Inc., call (316) 321-3835.

KDWP to meet

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting and public hearing will be held at Southwestern College’s Wroten Hall in Winfield at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 11.

Anyone with an interest in hunting, fishing or simply enjoying the Great Outdoors in Kansas should attend one of these meetings when they get the chance. The evening session will start at 7 p.m.

On the agenda for general discussion will be a deer working group report, free park entrance and free fishing days, life hunts for big game and electronic licenses and permits. Seasons will also be set for antelope, elk, deer and the fall turkey season. Legal equipment and method of take for these species also will be discussed.

Another way to ‘stay in the know’ concerning Kansas outdoors is to subscribe to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks magazine. Each issue is loaded with the latest information on fishing, hunting, state parks, and other outdoor adventures, as well as spectacular color photographs. Call (800) 288-8387 to subscribe.

At the beginning of each year, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) begins taking reservations for state park campsites, cabins, and special event facilities. To reserve Kansas state park facilities for 2007, phone any state park office. For more information, visit the KDWP Web site at www.kdwp.state.ks.us.
