The Fort Riley bomb squad was called to Price Chopper on Monday after a suitcase was found sitting outside the store, near the propane bottle rack. The suitcase proved to be empty.
An employee found the suitcase a little before 4:30 p.m. and had no idea why it was there. The store management, not wanting to take chances, called police.
The area was cordoned off and the store closed. In addition to the Ft. Riley Explosives Unit, authorities also called in the ATF and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“We just wanted to be extra careful and be sure there was nothing dangerous there,” Deputy Police Chief Mike Lopez said.
An X-ray examination found no bomb in the case. The suitcase was opened, examined and removed by authorities, who left the scene at 8:14 p.m.
The store is located at 2703 W. Highway 50.
