Emergency personnel responded to a fatality accident at Roads 330 and S5 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Monday where 29-year-old Michael A. Coleman of Osage City lost control and the vehicle landed upside down submerged in a creek.

An Osage City man died Monday night after his car went into the water near Road 330 and Road S5, about a mile and a half east of Admire.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, Michael Allen Coleman, 29, had been driving north on Road S5 when his 1996 Mazda shot across the intersection and struck an embankment on the north side. The car went into the air, landing on its top in a creek north of Road 330.

Nearby residents heard the accident and called 911. The car was almost completely submerged when rescuers began to arrive at 10:42 p.m.

“The only thing sticking up was the back bumper,” Sheriff Gary Eichorn said. “They could still see the taillights under the water.”

Eichorn said Coleman’s car might have been in the water for 20 to 30 minutes before rescuers arrived.

Coleman was not conscious when he was removed from the car. He was taken to Newman Regional Health where he was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff’s department, the cause of the accident is still under investigation. An autopsy will take place later today.

Those on the scene included sheriff’s deputies, a Lyon County ambulance crew, the Emporia Fire Department’s water rescue unit, the North Lyon County First Responders and a Midwest Life Team helicopter.
