Reed lights up Jayhawk-linn for 37 in Burlington victory

Wednesday, February 28, 2007

Turns out Tyrel Reed at 80 percent is better than most of the state at 100 percent.

Still slowed by an ankle injury that kept him out five games, Reed scorched Jayhawk-Linn Tuesday night, scoring 37 points in Burlington’s 89-53 victory.

“He’s starting to get better,” Burlington coach Stacy Reed said. “He’s still not at 100 percent, but he’s slowly getting there. It’s a long process, but tonight, he shot lights out.”

Even that might be an understatement.

The 6-foot-3 senior, who is committed to play for Kansas next season, made 14 of 17 shots from the field. That included a 7-for-9 performance from three-point range.

Burlington (20-1) grabbed a 74-33 lead before freely substituting in the fourth quarter.

“We got to play everybody, and it’s nice to do that at the end of the season on your home floor,” Stacy Reed said.

Nick Garrett added 20 points for the Wildcats, while Luke Barnwell contributed 14.

BHS will play against Osage City or Wellsville on Friday at Central Heights.

Herington girls 63,

Wabaunsee 48

Kristin Kleinschmidt once again carried the load for the Herington girls, scoring 27 points in the Lady Railers’ 63-48 victory in Sub-State action.

It was the second consecutive game Kleinschmidt has notched 27 points and her third 20-plus-point effort in a row.

“She’s really stepping up as our only senior and helping us win games,” Herington coach Jayson Emig said. “The girls did a good job of getting her the ball.”

The Lady Railers grabbed a 29-14 halftime lead before hitting a skid in the third quarter. Wabaunsee pulled to within six, putting the pressure on with a full-court press.

Herington stepped up to the challenge, slowing the game down and also hitting free throws to build the lead back up.

“We never lost our composure and never let that stretch bury us,” Emig said. “We’ve really matured over the season.”

In all, Herington made 18 of its 26 free-throw attempts. Kleinschmidt added an 11-of-14 effort at the line.

Crysta Brockmeier was the other offensive standout for the Lady Railers, scoring 20 points. Chanell Makovec and Kaleigh Schneider both added six points.

Herington advances to play Minneapolis on Friday at Bennington.

The Flinthills girls dominated Yates Center 91-21 in the first round of Class 1A Substate Tuesday night at Flinthills.

The Lady Mustangs scored more points in three individual quarters than Yates Center did the entire game.

“What else do I say?” Flinthills coach Mark Womacks said. “It was a great game to start Sub-State with.”

Flinthills began the game with a full-court press, which led to numerous turnovers. The Lady Mustangs ended the game with 39 steals.

“Hopefully this will get us jump-started for the rest of the week,” Womacks said.

Lacey Breech led Flinthills with 32 points, followed by Caley Onek with 22 and Alexa Cuskelly with 13.

N. Heights boys 66,

Riley County 58

Northern Heights went a perfect 12-for-12 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter in a come-from-behind victory against Riley County Tuesday night in the first round of Sub-State action.

Riley County led 48-40 after a sloppy third quarter from the Wildcats.

“We took a nap in the third quarter,” Northern Heights coach Lanny Massey said.

The Wildcats tied the game midway through the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws from JW Roeder after a technical was called on a frustrated Riley County player.

“We went into our jump trap and got some easy turnovers,” Massey said. “It frustrated one of their kids a little bit.”

Massey credited the win to his team’s free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter. While Northern Heights was 19-of-21 overall from the line, Riley County was only 10-of-22.

“The game was decided at the line,” Massey said. “We hit ours and they missed theirs.”

Rick Hobson led the Wildcats with 24 points, and two other Northern Heights players scored in double figures.

While the majority of the offensive production was on the backs of just three players, Massey said he wasn’t worried about diversifying the offensive threats because Riley County caused more havoc than the stat sheets showed.

“We’ve got other kids who can score,” Massey said. “We played against a team that put an awful lot of pressure on the ball.”
