John O’Connor of Hartford remained upbeat and encouraging Tuesday evening after the final primary-election vote tallies were recorded at the County Clerk’s office.
“It’s maybe not my time; that’s fine,” O’Connor said Tuesday night after finishing third in a three-man race for Position 2 on the Southern Lyon County board of eduction. “The only real thing that I can say would be more support for students after school.”
Voters for Position 2 gave Kenny Hamman 48 votes, Donald Roberts, 44 votes, and O’Connor, 23.
O’Connor said would like the board of education to do more research on the benefits of after-school tutoring to provide help for students who may need extra attention in academics.
O’Connor mentioned that the previous superintendent, Paul Dorathy, had designated after-school support as a priority when the district receive some unexpected funding approximately two years ago. Nothing yet has been done in that area, O’Connor said.
“I’d encourage research on that, with support from the administration,” he said.
O’Connor, whose father and brother both have been members of the Southern Lyon County board of education, said that he wants to see stability and better academics in the district.
He said his passion was to see support from the community and the administration for after-school opportunities to improve academic achievements.
“You can’t squeeze more from a teacher’s heart, as far as I can tell,” he said.
Jesse Howard, candidate for the at-large school board seat, Position 7, had no comment Tuesday evening. Howard finished third, with 37 votes, in the three-man contest. Roland Martin received 255 votes and Craig Clark received 111.
