Hornets Sting MIAA Twice

Tuesday, February 27, 2007

Emporia State guards Donta Watson and DeAndre Townsend were both named to the All-MIAA first team Monday, marking the first time in school history that two Hornets have been named to the first team in the same year.

Watson, a 5-foot-11 senior from Evansville, Ind., is the league’s leading scorer, averaging 19.5 points per game while leading the conference in made 3-pointers and free-throw percentage. He transferred to ESU in January 2006 from Division-I San Jose State.

Townsend, a 5-foot-8 junior from Minneapolis, Minn., averages 17.3 points per game to rank fifth in the MIAA. He averaged 18.8 points in conference play and also is fourth in the league in assists after transferring from Rainy River (Minn.) CC.

Watson and Townsend are the fourth and fifth Hornets to earn first-team All-MIAA honors. The other three were Andy Uphoff in 1992-93, James McCallop in 1994 and Robbie Ballard, who took league MVP honors in 2003.

Emporia High product Wes Book earned MIAA honorable mention honors after averaging 13.6 points per game to rank 13th in the conference. He also was third in the league in steals and ninth in rebounds.

The 6-foot-4 junior was the 2005 MIAA freshman of the year.

Ed Desir earned the other honor for ESU, earning a spot on the All-Defensive Team.

The senior ranked second in the MIAA in both blocked shots and defensive rebounds.

Northwest Missouri State swept the top three awards in the conference, with sophomore Hunter Henry taking league MVP honors.

Coach Steve Tappmeyer was named Wilson/MIAA coach of the year, while guard Lance Sullivan was freshman of the year.

Central Missouri’s Theo Jones earned the league’s defensive player of the year.
