Olpe boys 63, Burrton 37
The Olpe boys overcame a slow start to defeat Burrton, 63-37, in the Class 1A Regional tournament Friday night at Olpe.
Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said he felt the Eagles might have been shaking off some postseason jitters in the first quarter, when they were down 8-7.
“I don’t know if it’s a little nerves,” Schmidt said. “We didn’t come out real aggressive on the offensive end.”
The first half score could have been worse. Forward Dallas Burenheide finished a three-point play in the last seconds of the first quarter to pull within one and give momentum to the Eagles.
“He gave us big minutes,” Schmidt said of Burenheide. “He was playing in the post and we got him the ball and got active.”
The second quarter saw the Eagles shedding those nerves, outscoring Burrton 23-10 and taking a commanding lead for the remainder of the game.
“We got some stuff inside and that got some stuff for the outside,” Schmidt said. “We had a pretty good game defensively.”
Olpe will play Goessel tonight for the Regional championship.
“They got pretty good balanced scoring (at Goessel),” Schmidt said. “They play in a real tough league out west. We’re going to have to come to play.”
