Council Grove
A new program, Balance Training for Fall Prevention, is being offered at the Morris County Hospital Rehabilitation Department. Physical therapy professional Dawn Palmquits, assisted by Orgene Des Coteaus, are offering the program aimed at improving balance and preventing falls.
Clay Kniebel, an eighth-grader at White City, won the Morris County Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word “campaign” and then “drawl.” Hannah Vendemkamp, Council Grove seventh-grader, finished second and Ty Larson, White City seventh grader, finished third.
The promotion of tourism, particularly agritourism, will be one of the two main goals of the Greater Morris County Development Corporation during 2007, President John White, announced during the organization’s recent annual meeting. The board of directors is developing a matching grant program to help county residents in starting agritourism businesses. The GMCDC’s 2007 budget includes $50,000 for the grant program.
The Council Grove American Legion Post No. 121 building, restaurant and bar will close on Feb. 28, according to Post 121 officials. It is hoped the post can retain possession of the building. The American Legion post plans to offer the building and its contents for lease.
Burlington
The Coffey County Courthouse will soon receive an electrical upgrade following action taken last week by Coffey County Commissioners. The present switchgear is original equipment from when the courthouse was built in the 1960s. During last summer’s heat wave, the circuit panel overheated and nearly caught fire when the second or third air conditioning units started. The project should start by mid-March and take about 75 calendar days to reach substantial completion.
The Coffey County Museum has re-opened its doors to the public despite extensive damage to portions of the main building’s north interior walls. After closing for a week to assess water damage caused by an unknown water source, as well a move irreplaceable artifacts, the museum is open during regular hors throughout the week. It will be closed on weekends through February, with plans to open on weekends in March. Water damage to the genealogy library has rendered it unavailable to the public, although microfilm archives are accessible.
Lebo
Brittany Charboneau, a Lebo sixth-grader won the Coffey County Spelling Bee recently. Charboneau out-spelled 11 other area student to win the spelling bee. Charboneau said she probably won because she studied lists of words and reads a lot.
