Eagle Scout
Matthew Cuadra son of Robert and JoAnn Cuadra received his Eagle Scout award on Feb. 18 at Messiah Lutheran Church. He started in scouts at Pack 131 at William Allen White School. Matthew received his arrow of light award and crossed over into Troop 165 at Grace United Methodist Church.
He has attended many different scouting events and camps which include Camp Jayhawk, Camp Cedars in Neb., Ben Delatour Scout Ranch in Co., Camp Orr in Ark., and Spanish Peaks High Adventure Base. One of Matthew’s most memorable camps was going to Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch in Colorado, where he backpacked in the mountains for a week. He achieved brotherhood status in the Order of the Arrow.
In 2005, he attended National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. Matthew toured the Battlefield of Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and many other historical landmarks
In 2006 at Messiah Lutheran Church, Matthew earned his God and Life award. Matthew earned a total of 36 merit badges and numerous other awards.
Perform at convention
Aaron Thomas and Evan Thomas, both of Emporia, are among the 14 members of the Washburn University percussion ensemble that performed at the annual Kansas Music Educator’s convention Saturday at Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center in Wichita. The ensemble was accepted to perform following competitive auditions.
Aaron Thomas is a senior majoring in music, Evan Thomas is a freshman majoring in music education.
Athletes honored
Four University of Kansas student athletes from Emporia were among 362 named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for 2006 during halftime of the KU-Colorado men’s basketball game Jan. 27 at Allen Fieldhouse.
The four achieved a semester grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. They are: Luke S. Arndt, football; Megan Elizabeth Durbin, swimming and diving; John Wesley Kosko, football; and Dena M. Seibel, women’s track and field.
Wins scholarship
Crystal Cunningham, a sophomore biology major from Emporia, recently received the Truman State University Student Alumni Association Scholarship. Two students were selected from more than 20 applicants as recipients of the $200 scholarship. The scholarship honors outstanding students who recognize the importance of staying active in the Truman community as alumni.
Texas wrestling champ
Jacob Gutierrez, grandson of Margaret and Verlan Deemy of Strong City and great grandson of Paul Gutierrez and the late Sisto Joe Rangel of Emporia, got his start in wrestling about a year ago. Eleven months later, the fourth-grader is a state champion.
Jacob won the 75-pound novice Texas state championship on Jan. 27 in Austin, Texas.
