7 of the 8 candidates running for city commission prepare to make their opening statements at Thursday night's candidate forum at Emporia State University's Visser Hall.
OLPE — Olpe schools were recognized for a prestigious award Thursday afternoon — the Governor’s Achievement Award for one of the top performing schools in the state.
To receive this award, schools must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and math for 2006; the school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading and math and one additional measure in 2006 (for elementary schools and middle schools, attendance); and the school must have been among schools in the top 5 percent in reading and math in 2006 state assessments at its respective level.
Fourty-four elementary schools, 12 middle schools and 18 high schools around the state qualified for the award. Staff and students at Olpe Elementary School, Olpe Middle School and Olpe High School made the requirements. In an all-school assembly, students and staff were recognized for their hard work.
Jana Shaver, District No. 9 representative for the State Board of Education, spoke to the school about their achievements.
“When I looked at what you accomplished, I was blown away,” Shaver said. “Only four elementary schools in the district got this award. You are in the top five percent in assessment, that is very, very good. I think you are a model for other schools in the state.”
Southern Lyon County Superintendent Mike Argabright extended a thank-you to everybody involved in the schools’ success.
“Thank you to the teaching staff,” Argabright said. “And thank you to the kids for doing your best. This is the best of the best!”
Argabright told students that in the next five to 10 years schools are going to be seeing a teacher shortage.
“If you have an interest in teaching, I want you to do that,” he said. “Your kids deserve the best. There are some big rewards in teaching.”
Argabright then turned over the presentation to Olpe Elementary School Principal Bill Warner, who recognized each group of students and teachers for their achievements. Last year’s third, fourth and fifth graders received standards of excellence in reading and math. The sixth-graders received the standard of excellence in reading and math also.
“We’re really, really proud of this award,” Warner said.
Shari Hatfield, Olpe High School principal recognized the middle and high school’s achievements.
Hatfield said the 11th graders received awards in reading; 10th grade in math; and seventh and eighth grade in reading and math.
“As I’ve told you before, Olpe is a great place to be,” Hatfield said. “You can see the teachers have worked hard.”
