The No. 25 Emporia State baseball team picked up its first victories of the season against Bemidji State on Thursday, winning 9-3 and 5-0 at McDonald Stadium in El Dorado.
The Hornets started the bats early in Game One, scoring four runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Keith Hernandez led ESU, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Jerry Cook gave punch from the eight-hole, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Mark McBratney also added a double and two RBI, while Trent Lare picked up the win, allowing just one earned run in five innings.
In the matinee, ESU broke through for all five runs in the fifth inning to take the shutout victory.
Nick Carlson had the key at-bat, contributing a bases-loaded, two-out triple to clear the bases and give the Hornets a 5-0 advantage.
Mickey Lara went six strong innings on the mound, allowing six hits while striking out five.
The Hornets are scheduled to play their first true home games today, playing Bemidji State in a noon doubleheader at Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Thursday’s games were moved to El Dorado because ESU’s field was still saturated with ice and snow.
Softball tourney canceled
Because of recent snow and forecasted thunderstorms in the St. Louis area this weekend, the SIU-Edwardsville Cougar Classic has been canceled.
The No. 3 ESU softball team was scheduled to play four games in the weekend tournament. Those games will not be made up.
The Hornets’ next action is scheduled for March 2-4 in the Central Oklahoma Classic in Edmond, Okla.
