An art exhibit showing this month at Java Cat-5 Coffee House will culminate with a “music happening” Friday evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“Instead of having a stuffy formal recital, we decided to have a ‘gig,’” said Jane McCoy, whose music students will perform that evening.
Five guitar players and one cellist, ranging from fifth through eighth grade, will be on the program.
McCoy said that when she suggested having the live music show at Java Cat, owner Scott Bolley “came up with the idea of displaying student art at his business.”
McCoy contacted art teachers in Emporia, and they in turn brought in work by the young artists. The project is not affiliated with the Emporia school district.
“We got three art teachers and they each entered six students’ art work,” McCoy said. “They just volunteered.”
Music students who will perform are: Allie Mitchell, cello; Logan Ranger, guitar; Ashley Jackson, guitar; and Amanda Belford, Kelly Bacon and Jordan Sosa, each doing guitar and vocal numbers.
Artists and their teachers are:
High school students of Josh Pavlik: Josue Rios, Stephanie Crosby, Aldo Sandoval, Charlie Sigle, Carlos Hernandez and Bianca Herrada.
Elementary students of Jamie Eisenbarth: Alisha Henery, Isaac Azua, Colleen Smith, Cassius Livingston, Diamonique Robles, Gabrielle Rathke and Alejandra Reynosa.
Middle school students of Kristan Oberle: Bailey Sosa, Giana Servantez, Anna Lopez, Oscar Lemus, Mindy Pham and Hanh Lam.
The program is open to the public at no charge.
