Emporia now has its own Minuteman Civil Defense Corps chapter.
The announcement came in a meeting on Saturday from Ed Hayes, director of the Kansas Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. The organization originally started as a group of people who would patrol the borders and report people illegally coming into the country.
“This is the border,” said Lex Price, who will head the local chapter. “We have to stop it here. When you join the chapter here, you join all the other chapters. Our power comes from joining together.
“We’re not white. We’re not black. We’re Americans. We’re patriotic Americans.”
Hayes said the Minuteman organization started less that two years ago. There are three chapters in Kansas, including Emporia. The organization has chapters in 40 states, with the goal of having chapters in all 50 states.
“They would get together and watch the border,” Hayes said about the organization’s roots. “We do not take action. We do not make contact with anyone. We watch and then report. We’re not the law.”
Hayes said the organization’s goal is to preserve the United States by preventing illegal aliens from entering the country and lowering the number of immigrants that are allowed into the country each year.
“The movement is to save our country as we know it today,” Hayes said. “There are so many people coming into our country.”
Price said the point of Saturday’s meeting was to get people together in the Emporia area.
“I want America like I knew it,” Price said. “We can get together as friends and gripe among ourselves, but the time has come and if we don’t join together and be proactive we will be overtaken. It’s a concerted effort to push us in the dark.”
Price said that U.S. citizens don’t have the same rights as illegal aliens and that more money in schools is put toward illegal aliens’ children than U.S. citizens’ children and the cost of health care is going up.
Price said that people who speak against illegal aliens are looked down upon.
“If you’re against them, you’re a racist, you’re a bigot,” Price said. “If we want to seal the border, we’re racist. We need to do something. If you don’t, they’ll pick us off one by one.”
Hayes agrees.
“We’ve got a lot of people who are afraid to join because they are afraid to be called names,” Hayes said. “We get called all sorts of things, but the only way to get beyond that is to step up and not care what they call us.”
Hayes added that the organization is not made up of racist people.
“We’re not that,” he said. “We’re patriots.”
Minuteman is working with a Hispanic group out of Wichita called the People’s Alliance for Latino Advancement, Hayes said.
“They are American citizens,” Hayes said. “They are for our country. That shows that not all Hispanics want to have illegal aliens in the country.”
Hayes said the organization also is against what is called the NAFTA Superhighway. Hayes said the highway will run from Texas through the middle of the country on up into Canada.
“The plan is to erase our borders,” Hayes said. “What this is all about is to make Canada, America and Mexico a unified government just like Europe.”
Hayes added that the highway would be several lanes wide and there would be a “smart port” in Kansas City, where inspections would take place.
“That’s going to be sovereign Mexican territory,” Hayes said. “Same as their embassy in Washington, D.C. Who’s going to look at the trucks? It’s going to be Mexico.”
Larry Wiley, webmaster for the Kansas Minuteman, also talked about the superhighway.
“That corridor is going to cut this country in half,” Wiley said. He added that part of the highway is being built in Texas. “They’re taking land by imminent domain. It’s a pretty bad thing going on in Texas.”
One of the tasks of Minuteman is to educate the public, Hayes said.
“We need people to watch something else other than the 6 o’clock news on television,” he said. “People need to shop around.”
Hayes said the influx of illegal aliens is draining the United States’ resources.
“They’re ramped on our social services,” he said. “Social Security, food stamps, SRS, hospitals. A number of hospitals in the Southwest are going out of business. If they come in, they have to treat them.”
Hayes said the large number of foreign people coming into the United States are bringing in foreign diseases.
“They’re bringing in Third World diseases,” Hayes said. “Are illegal aliens coming in being checked for diseases? No.”

It's true beyond a shadow of a doubt that something must be done to control the influx of illegals. Our government rewards outfits like Tyson Foods for bringing them in - but where does this burden land? Right in the laps of middle class taxpayers. What I want to see is one major crackdown on outfits such as Tyson Foods. They are the culprits - and are grinning all the way to the bank.

Wow. I think this is incredibly offensive. Where, exactly, is the border these "minutemen" are protecting? Texas? New Mexico? Arizona, maybe California? Last time I had geography, KS was not near a Mexican border......or any border for that matter.
And has anyone stopped to think--the immigrants are the ones who actually accept the crappy jobs that us Americans are too good for.....because they are actually happy to have a paycheck at all. Lots of Americans are quite happy to just live off of the government (federal, state and local).
Take away unemployment and see what happens. People might actually have to work. Well, that, or make meth.
It's really a double-edged sword. Be careful what you wish for.

I am certainly glad the folks of Emporia have a new subject to talk about. Illegals DO NOT have SSN so they can NOT get SRS, food stamps. etc. The federal government will continue to do nothing about immigration because it is the 21st century version of slavery. It is the white folks who have the sense of entitlement who weaken the system. Not the illegals. I have been to other countries with other white people and we expected the country we were in to speak English not us to speak the native language. Why don't we discuss something that will really change of our life's like gay marriage? I feel so much better about the rising costs of gas and medications knowing that gays can't be married and we have some gung ho morons patroling the borders safe from people who are looking for a better life. Just like most of our ancestors did.

The negative comments on this page indicates the ignorance or how uninformed some of our society is on this matter of illegal immigration. Once again I will say this, open up your mind and study the problem. Attend a Minuteman meeting and you will learn something. What is it about "ILLEGAL" that you do not understand? Are we a nation of laws or not? Have you heard of forged social security cards, birth certificates etc.? Identity theft? You will. Have you heard of "anchor babies" No matter what your status, if you have a child born in the US, that is your ticket to nearly all social benefits if not all. These people know that before they ever get here. Their countries give them a book on what is available in the "Promise Land" and how to go about getting it. Another reason they come in the first place. If you don't believe this check into the number of babies born to illegals in the SW states each year. It's your country and your money and your job you are willing to forfeit. Do the math and your civic duties and study the problem, you may change your mind on this matter of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and this INVASION and that is exactly what it is.

There is a thin line between patriotism and hatred in this whole discussion.
I think there are people with both of those strong feelings getting involved and muddling the issues even more.
Please take a few minutes to sit and think to yourself about immigration and really ask yourself why you feel so strongly about it...
Is it because you see your way of life declining as a society?
OR
Is it because you see another Hispanic or African or Asian or Indian stealing your jobs in a small, predominantly caucasian, town.

There is a difference between illegal immigration and flat out racism. Some of these comments come across more as racist (Mexicans, Somalians). Not every brown or black skinned person in Emporia is an illegal immigrant--please stop tying it into race. Playing the fear cards (they're dirty, diseased, endangering us) doesn't help either. If you can't present a rational argument without fear triggers, then I have to be suspicious of your motives.

Shameful. I wonder--does GOD allow racism? Or is it okay to be racist and hateful during the week as long as one makes his/her weekly appearance in church to be forgiven?

The Minute Men are nothing but a bunch of Old White Men scared of losing their place in society. The same way the members of the KKK were worried about what would happen to them(old white men) after the civil war all the way through the 1960's. They said they were doing it for their nation. These same type of people didn't want women to have the right to vote. Didn't want the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments passed. But fact of the matter is, they were nothing but old, scared, white men. Mere blips on the radar of mankind. Just like Mr. Hayes. Just like Mr. Price.

Can you please give your source 4_Emporia? My source is clearly outdated, even though it is the most trusted population calculation in the United States ... the Census ... here are my facts.
As of the census of 2000, there were 26,760 people, 10,253 households, and 6,039 families residing in Emporia. The racial makeup of the city was 78.63% White, 2.96% African American, 0.48% Native American, 2.66% Asian, 12.75% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 21.49% of the population.
This data is near 7 years old but that is the best I can go off of so please tell me where I can find more current data. Thank you.

You actually think that every person is counted in a census. I am glad you noticed that your information is 7 years old. Did you forget about the "400 or so" somalis that just moved to town. Don't forget about one of the most diverse Universities in Div 2 that brings many other nationalities. I think it was the Gazette that ran a pole recently, although it was a random selection. To give you an idea of an actual valid sample of our diversity is the Emporia school district. They have shown that there is a population of minorities well over 50% in the city. Also, how many non-citizens are reported on the census. How about you walk outside and take a look around. I am a minority but I still think that we have a serious problem on out hands as a nation.

Don't care for haters. Hate comes from a closed mind. Hate destroys. Open discussion, without vitriol, is a good way to find the middle ground, a place where batmen and batmen haters can respect each other's opinion and humanity even when they strongly disagree. Don't let "I hate what illegal immigration is doing" become "I hate everyone who doesn't think like I do." You're just hurting yourself.

For those here who think that WE are the haters, close-minded, and a bunch of scared old white men. Ok, playtime is over, it is time to grow up and get yourself educated. Since we're so terrible and mean, I propose that we adopt Mexico's immigration laws, since they are obviously so much more open-minded and caring than we are. Please read, and then maybe in the future you might actually have a clue as to what you are talking about....

Since I'm sure there are those of you here who will be too lazy to read the links I posted, or, even more likely, the ones here who call everyone else "haters" and "KKK members", usually flat out refuse to even listen to any fact or truth if it runs contrary to what they believe. (I'm still waiting to hear some comment from the person who thought all Somalian women are so happy and content what they thought of the link I posted about Somalian female circumcision). So I'll post a quick synopsis of Mexican immigration laws, maybe we should extend the olive branch of peace, love, and good relations between countries and tell Mexico "You win. We will stop all this nonsense and adopt your laws, since yours are so much better than ours, which were written by a bunch of racist, bigoted, KKK members".
Let's look at the immigration laws of Mexico:
Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country. This ban applies, among other things, to participation in demonstrations and the expression of opinions in public about domestic politics.
Equal employment rights are denied to immigrants, even legal ones, even those with green cards.
Only citizens may serve in the military as officers, on airline crews , and chiefs of seaports and airports.
Members of both houses of Congress as well as the Supreme Court must be a citizen by birth.
Immigrants — even legal ones — may not become members of the clergy.
Foreigners, legal or illegal, may not own land.
Any citizen may arrest illegal immigrants and their accomplices, turning them over without delay to the nearest authorities.
Foreigners, legal or otherwise, may be expelled for any reason and without due process.

Also, if you read back to my earlier comments I am a Minority who agrees that we have an immigration problem and I came here legally and so should everyone else. The article about minutemen stated that they are working with a Hispanic american group that agrees with them. "In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
The United States has long been a melting pot for immigrants as evidenced by the comments of Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. One problem is that this generation of immigrants does not want to melt into the fabric of American society. They want to take advantage of opportunities in America but not adapt to the ways of the country that is giving them a better opportunity. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? So, many make no attempt to learn English or do what is needed to become citizens.
They are indeed causing economic problems throughout the country. The median income level in Lyon County is well below the average for the state for a reason.
It is too simple to label Americans concerned with this as racist. It is a complex issue that must be balanced legally, ethically and morally. There will be people on both extremes (bleeding hearts vs. true racists) who attempt to take advantage of the issue to skew it towards their point of view.
However, we must proceed with immigration in a reasonable and orderly fashion to ensure that it is not detrimental to our country. Controlling illegal immigration must be addressed for the sake of our future.
A majority of Americans agree with many of the positions taken by the Minuteman organization. If you don't believe me, just check out this website for proof.

The recent nationwide pet food recall, that resulted in the deaths of at least a dozen family pets, is linked to Menu Foods, which has one of its 3 US plants in Emporia, KS. Does anyone on this forum know what percentage of this plant's employees are presumed to be illegal aliens? The growing number of recalls and virus outbreaks during the past year is becoming a concern to Americans. Not at all surprising, most of these virus outbreaks and recalls originate in areas of the country where there are high concentrations of illegal aliens. Meanwhile, I plan to gather information about Menu Foods' other locations (Pennsauken, NJ and S Sioux City, SD). NJ is a safe haven for illegals, so there is no question a sizeable portion of the employees in this plant are illegals. Please feel free to contact me privately through the forum or post directly to the forum. If there is enough verifiable information to show Menu Foods is hiring illegals and there may be a connection with this recent pet food contamination, it might warrent justification for an investigation by BICE. Thanks all
