Burlington

The Burlington City Council on a 4-2 vote, decided to override the city planning commission’s Jan. 25 recommendation to rezone five lots in the 400 block of LaMoille Street — two C-2 commercial and three R-1 single-family residential lots — to R-3 multiple-family residential. The plan was to build three duplex houses north of the Burlington Branch of the Coffey County Library. The Coffey Counting Housing Authority requested the rezoning.

Lebo

More than $250,000 in damage to a house and its contents occurred last week at the Kenneth and Diane Spielman home in Lebo. Mrs. Spielman was working in a home office area when she thought she smelled smoke. She saw a fire in a wall in the area where a flue pipe from a wood burning stove in the basement ran up and exited the house. The fire spread to the rest of the house. The house was destroyed.

Council Grove

Council Grove’s New House Incentive Program that will provide tax rebates, waive city permit fees, provide free sewer service and minimum water for one year, and several other benefits, was approved Monday evening by the Council Grove City Council. The city’s New House Incentive Program will provide a five-year property tax rebate (city portion only) on the first 20 new houses constructed each calendar year within the city limits. The homes must have a $100,000 to $300,000 valuation. The tax rebate will be available to the first occupant only.

Cottonwood Falls

The USD 284 Board of Education met on Monday and learned of three resignations in the district. Two of the resignations were significant: Diane Dodez, Chase County Elementary principal and Superintendent Rick Weiss. The third resignation came from Chase County High School Cross Country Coach Anita Cahoone.
