ALEX LARSON, who won the Lyon County Spelling Bee. Joe Vaughan of Neosho Rapids finished second.
• Emporia State University basketball players Michelle Stueve and Casey Henningsen, who have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections.
• Chandry Kraft, who participated in the Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Show and was named the circuit champion in hunt seat equitation.
• Emporia High School swimmer Aaron Clark, who placed first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in the Centennial League swimming meet.
• Local participants who took part in the Polar Plunge. The event raised $11,560 for Special Olympics.
• Heather Coe, who took part in the EHS Power Lifting competition and broke the women’s bench press record in the 123-pound weight class. She benched 160 pounds.
• The Emporia Rotary Club, which donated $2,000 to the Peter Pan Playground.
• Carol Shaefer, who will fill in on the Emporia School board. She will fill the unexpired term of Jeff Larson.
• Jacob Louks, who bowled a 300 game and a 806 series. Loucks is the youngest bowler in Emporia to bowl an 800.
• Judith Heasley, who has accepted the position of ESU’s new director of University Advancement.
• Marilyn McComber, who was named a Kansas Master Teacher. The award honors long-serving teachers who exemplify the best qualities of the profession.
