Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.
THE AMOUNT of news coverage on Anna Nicole Smith’s death has been staggering. It has been surprising to see quality news organizations airing her tabloid story for days on end.
It might be hard to believe that after the all years of news coverage on Smith there are some people who don’t know who she was. But the other day, I ran into Richard Herrman and he admitted he had never heard of her before. He said he took some good ribbing from his coffee group when he confessed that.
So what, if anything, is Smith’s contribution to our society that makes her warrant this type of coverage? Some have speculated that she may be our generation’s Marilyn Monroe. Not that her death deserves any more attention, but I am curious: Is she or isn’t she the new Monroe? What do you think?
