Book series
The Emporia Public Library continues the “Kansas Connections” 2007 Book Discussion Series to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Emporia. Meetings are at 7 p.m. at the library, 110 E. Sixth Ave., with multiple copies of the selected titles available for checkout.
The series began Jan. 3 with “Home Town News: William Allen White and the Emporia Gazette” by Sally Foreman Griffith; and Feb. 7, “The Learning Tree” by Gordon Parks. The series continues with:
• March 7, “Sod and Stubble” by John Ise.
• April 4, “Trail of the Spanish Bit” by Don Coldsmith.
• May 2, “Picnic” by William Inge.
• June 6, “Behold a Red Horse” by Cotton Smith.
• July 11, “The Last Cattle Drive” by Robert Day.
• Aug. 1, “Kansas Troubles” by Earlene Fowler.
• Sept. 5, “The Center of Everything” by Laura Moriarty.
• Oct. 3, “A Breed Apart” by Max McCoy.
• Nov. 7, “Virgin of Small Plains” by Nancy Pickard.
• Dec. 5, “The Persian Pickle Club” by Sandra Dallas.

ESU concerts
On Feb. 16, guest artists Robert Spring, clarinet, and J.B. Smith, percussion, will perform at Emporia State University, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Heath Recital Hall at Beach Music Hall.
A faculty recital featuring Jeff Hodapp on tuba and euphonium, will be at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 18 in Heath Recital Hall. The ESU Jazz Ensemble Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; student and senior citizens, $4. Information: 341-5431.
‘Paper Cuts’ at ESU
“Paper Cuts: The Art of Contemporary Paper” continues to run through March 2 at the Eppink Gallery at ESU. The exhibit displays 30 sculptres made entirely of paper, from origami to more abstract creations. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Upcoming exhibits at the Eppink include the “Jill Reynolds and ESU Students Collaborative Installation,” which will be up from March 5 through April 2, and the annual ESU juried student exhibition from April 9 through Mary 11.
In the Gibson Room Gallery, works by ceramic artist Chris Meyeres will begin to go on display Feb. 27. The show will be up through March 16.
