Olpe’s 59-point 1st half leads to 81-43 triumph

The No. 1-ranked Olpe Lady Eagles were never challenged on Tuesday night, running away from Wichita Sunrise in an 81-43 victory.

“Honestly, we were awfully good coming right out of the lockerroom,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “We probably played our best half of basketball in that first half.”

Olpe (19-0) exploded for 34 points in the first quarter, taking a 34-7 lead after eight minutes.

The Lady Eagles tacked on 25 points in the second quarter to take a 59-14 advantage into the break.

“They have a really athletic team,” Nelson said, “but we just played very well early.”

Kayla Krueger led Olpe with 24 points. Megan Woods added 14, while Samantha Maley contributed nine.

Ten players scored in all for the Lady Eagles.

Burlington started off slow but used a solid defensive stand to overcome Eureka 46-29 Tuesday night at Burlington.

While Burlington only made three field goals in the first quarter, the defense held Eureka to just two points.

“We didn’t shoot the ball real well, but the flow of the game was in our favor,” Burlington coach Doug Stewart said.

Burlington’s Becca Holman led the scoring with 14, while three players — Kristi Kesler, Katie Guevel and Heather Eddings — added nine.

“We had good, even scoring and interior passing,” Stewart said.

Deedra Baker scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down six rebounds, helping Flinthills take the 10-point victory over St. Paul.

The Lady Mustangs took a 29-21 lead into halftime before pushing that advantage to 45-33 at the end of the third quarter.

Flinthills dominated St. Paul on the glass, out-rebounding the Lady Indians 31-13.

Taylor Stands added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Lacey Breech contributed nine points.

FHS made 21 of its 40 shots (53 percent) from the field.
