Firefighters cleaning up spill

Environmental officer on scene

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

A weakened wall in a railway car appears to be the source of a hazardous material leak around 10:30 this morning on Burlington Northern/Santa Fe property in southwest Emporia.

"It's a tank car apparently that was just sitting there," said Steve Forsberg, spokesman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. "Apparently its wall cracked or something and it's leaking denatured alcohol."

Firefighters were called to the scene this morning on railroad property in southwest Emporia.

The spill appeared to be approximately one block west of Second Avenue and West Street, near the railroad tracks.

The area was blocked from pedestrian traffic at press time. Fire department officers were working at the scene and not available for comment late this morning.

Forsberg said that the environmental officer had just arrived on the scene shortly before noon, and that more information would be available later.
