Coffey Co. defendants sentenced

Two Coffey County men will serve time in prison as a result of their recent convictions in Coffey County District Court.

The men were sentenced Friday by District Court Judge Phillip M. Fromme.

Randen L. Davis, 27, of Lebo received a controlling term of five years, eight months in prison as a result of his conviction on two counts of child abuse.

In a news release Monday afternoon, Witteman said that the victim was a three-month-old child who sufferred permanent brain damage as a result of being shaken.

Witteman said the crimes werre committed in August and September of 2006. Charges were filed Sept. 27, after an investigation by the Coffey County Sheriff’s Department.

Hoyt J. Massingill, 32, of Burlington will serve a 31-month sentence for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Coffey County Attorney Doug Witteman filed charges in October, after Massingill used an axe handle to attempt to strike a deputy sheriff during execution of an arrest warrant. Burlington Police Department officers assisted in the arrest.

This isn't the first abuse case for Mr. Davis. Just the first one he's been charged with. Too bad those poor children have to deal with the ignorance and incompetence of those they are ideally supposed to be able to look to for guidance, support, sense of value and self-worth, not to mention unconditional love.
Too much of this is right under our nose and it goes unreported, with a blind eye turned and the "not in my back yard" syndrome taking over. Well, I have news for you. IT IS YOUR BUSINESS. These children are our future. The cycle has to stop somewhere! Why not with this generation. ABOLISH ABUSE.
