Historical Society Meets

Monday, February 12, 2007

The 69th annual meeting for the Lyon County Historical Society was held Sunday, 1 p.m. in the Little Theatre of William Lindsay White Auditorium.

During the business meeting, conducted by president Becky Smith, the 2006 annual minutes were approved.

The officers serving for 2007 will be: president, Smith; vice-president, Carolyn Turney; secretary, Cathy Hoy; and treasurer, Steve Hanschu. Belle Grimsley and Bob Rodak were elected to serve on the Board with Carol Marshall, Stan Fowler, Rick Buck, Jerilynn Henrikson, Joyce Kennedy and Donna Eudaley.

Director Greg Jordan introduced his staff: Rita Scribner, curator; Kim Holcomb, education director; Brenda Lavington, archivist; Nancy Boyce, bookkeeper; and Carolyn Ekstrom, exhibits; and Pat Gum, museum docent, who were not in attendance.

Hanschu introduced Lyman Beecher Kellogg’s ancestors: two great granddaughters, Sue Kellogg Harris from the Bay Area in California and Claire Kellogg from Beaver Creek, Oregon, and a great, great grandson, Ross Kellogg Betzer from Portland, Oregon.

Scribner told the group that a survey of 150 years of daily life with emphasis on the advances of technology on the home front will be the focus for the LCHS Sesquicentennial exhibit for the February 20 Emporia birthday celebration.

Holcomb stated that this year many artifacts which have never been displayed in a museum setting will be visible during the Sesquicentennial year.

A detailed time line will be on display throughout the year in the museum and a condensed version will be used for the birthday celebration.

The Emporia Area Master Gardeners will have a Heritage Garden at the Howe House this year and it will be on the summer garden tour, June 23. There will be a Living History Day at the Howe House on Oct. 7 and the home will also be on the Holiday Homes Tour December 1-2. A Charles Dickens Christmas will be the theme for the two day event.

Hanschu presented Past and Present Architecture styles of homes and businesses in Emporia since 1857 for the program. The first picture was of the 1857 Old “News” Office.

Refreshments were served following adjournment.
