Waverly girls push past Northern Heights

The Waverly girls basketball team held Northern Heights to just four points in the first quarter en route to a 57-39 victory Friday night at Waverly.
“I thought that we played well the last three quarters but didn’t start the game very well,” Northern Heights head coach Tim Riemann said. “I need to do a better job of getting my team ready to play four quarters of basketball.”
Megan Steward led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points, while Amy Lee led the Lady Wildcats with 14.
The game was a physical battle, with Waverly and Northern Heights committing 21 and 20 fouls, respectively. Lady Bulldog forward Chelsea Good fouled out.

Flinthills girls 77,
Elk Valley 44
The Flinthills girls basketball team overpowered Elk Valley, 77-44, Friday night at Rosalia.
Eight different Lady Mustangs scored, including three in double digits. Lacey Breech and Caley Onek each had 17 while Alexa Cuskelly added 15.
“We had great balance in our scoring,” Flinthills coach Mark Womacks said.
It was the third game for Flinthills this week, and Womacks said it showed.
“We were sluggish and had dead legs,” Womacks said. “We played hard, but we were just not as quick as normal.”

The Osage City Lady Indians never let up as they defeated the Herington Lady Railers during Friday night’s game.
At halftime, the Lady Indians had doubled up on the Lady Railers by a score of 32-16.
Several players stood out for Osage City, with co-captain Katie Buenger leading the way with 19 points.
Buenger outscored all other players despite playing just three quarters. Kady Paul scored 12 points for Osage City.
Herington’s leading scorer was Chanell Makovec with nine points.

The second-quarter blues once again doomed the Chase County girls as they dropped a 12-point decision to Hope.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed just 14-12 after the first quarter before Hope went on a 17-2 run in the second period.
“We just have a second-quarter hump we need to get over,” Chase County coach Toby Baker said. “We get sped up, play too fast and then tend to throw ball away.”
Chase County outscored Hope 30-25 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Marie Hunt led Chase County with 13 points. Maci Wells, Sequoia Shull and Ashley Cahoone added eight points apiece.
