ESU softball splits 2 games

Saturday, February 10, 2007

The Emporia State softball team split a pair of games at the Texas Woman’s Invitational on Friday, losing to St. Edwards, 8-0, in five innings, before defeating Texas Woman’s University, 7-6.

“We’re just trying to find our niche right now,” ESU coach Kristi Bredbenner said. “It’s just going to take us a little while to get it together.”

In Game One, ESU never could get the offense rolling after the first inning.

Chelsea McClernon led off with a single, and after a pair of flyouts, Megan Davison singled to left field before getting thrown out trying to reach second base.

The Hornets had just two hits the rest of the way.

A four-run fifth inning allowed St. Edwards to end it with the run-rule.

“It’s always difficult that first time you’re getting out there,” Bredbenner said. “We hadn’t played on the field as a team since last fall.”

ESU (1-1) responded with five runs in the first two innings in its 7-6 victory over Texas Woman’s University.

Samantha Sheeley gave a complete-game effort for the win, allowing six earned runs. The right-hander struck out Amber Brooks with runners on first and second and two outs in the seventh to seal the Hornets’ victory.

Davison was the offensive highlight for ESU, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two RBI.
