The South rises in new film

Documentary film director Kevin Willmott will speak on the Emporia State University campus at 3 p.m. Thursday. Willmott is the director of the faux documentary “C.S.A: The Confederate States of America,” which will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

“C.S.A.” is a film about what America would have looked like had the South won the Civil War. How would slavery work in the 21st century? Would women have the right to vote? Would the United States have been an ally to Hitler during World War II? All of these are part of Willmott*s documentary.

The screenings and the lecture will take place in Science Hall, room 72.

“C.S.A” has been shown at various film festivals across the world in cities such as Denver, the Hamptons in New York, Locarno, Switzerland and Stockholm.

Willmott is a film professor at the University of Kansas. Along with “C.S.A.,” he has written, produced and co-produced the documentary “Ninth Street.” He has also co-authored the play “T-Money and Wolf,” about the Holocaust and contemporary gang violence.

As a screenwriter, Willmott co-wrote “Shields Green and the Gospel of John Brown,” “Civilized Tribes,” and “Little Brown Brothers” and he adapted Michael Blake’s book “Marching to Vallhalla.” He is currently writing the screenplay “Wilt of Kansas.”
