Northern Heights rallies past Pomona

Wednesday, February 7, 2007

The Northern Heights Wildcats faced a hard-fought battle in their 86-56 victory against the Pomona Indians during Tuesday night’s game.

The night started off shaky, as the Indians outscored the Wildcats, 24-20, through the first quarter.

“We started very slowly defensively in the first quarter,” Northern Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We allowed them to hit three of their four 3-pointers in the first quarter.”

A solid effort from the Indians’ Cole Worthington carried Pomona with a total of 20 points. Unfortunately, this game-high point total wasn’t enough to push the Indians to the victory.

Going into the second half, the Indians trailed by 10 points, and by the third quarter, the Wildcats held the lead with a 23-point buffer.

“The third quarter started slow and Pomona cut the lead to four before we got out transition game going and ran away with it,” Massey said.

Helping the Wildcats attain their victory were J.W. Roeder and Rick Hobson, who both had 16 points, and Derek Parks, who scored 13 points.

Hartford boys 66,

Williamsburg 57

Blake Edwards scored 19 points to lead Hartford over Williamsburg, 66-57, Tuesday night at Hartford.

Hartford only led by six at halftime, 32-26, when coach Chuck Ewy tried to motivate his players.

“I talked to them at halftime about coming out with some intensity,” Ewy said.

That led to the Jaguars adding to their lead, outscoring Williamsburg, 16-9, in the third quarter — a run led largely by the defense forcing turnovers.

“On defense, we had a lot of kids putting out a lot of effort,” Ewy said. “In the end, we created nine turnovers in the third quarter, which led to some easy fast-break points.”

Hartford also had a more balanced scoring attack. While three players were in double-digit scoring for the Jaguars — including Scott Gardner and Justin Farr — two Williamsburg players combined for most of its points.

“They relied on them, especially late in the game,” Ewy said. “When our offense runs through our post players, the offense runs more smoothly.”
