Hallie Kretsinger learned today that she has made it to the top of National Merit Scholarship program's list.
Emporia High School received notification this morning that Kretsinger, a senior, has been named a finalist in the program. Kretsinger was not available for comment because of a prior commitment, but her school counselor was.
"We are excited," said Teresa Maley, chairperson of the guidance department at EHS. "... She has gone as high as she can go now with this award."
Kretsinger earlier had been named a semifinalist and progressed through the final round to a top position. The value of the award will be determined by the university she chooses to attend.
"It all depends on where she goes to college," Maley explained. "Since she is a finalist, that means that some colleges will give a student at scholarship just because they are a finalist and other schools will not."
