A Hartford man died Tuesday after he slipped into grain while working in a silo at 1942 Road 75 in southeast Lyon County.
Billy L. Hamman, 66, had been unloading soybeans from the bin and found that a crust had formed at the top of the bin, authorities at the scene said on Tuesday afternoon.
Hamman climbed into the bin to break the crust and fell into the soybeans. A neighbor tried to rescue Hamman but was not able to free him.
Emergency personnel from the Emporia-Lyon County Fire Department and Lyon County Sheriff’s office were called to the scene about 10:53 a.m. Rescue workers cut five relief openings into the silo to drain the soybeans, but were not able to free Hamman before he died.
